Dr. Heather Stewart

When I was thirteen years old I started taking horseback riding lessons and caring for the horses at the stable. It was then that I knew I wanted to become a veterinarian, and at the time, I wanted to work exclusively with horses. I attended the University of Montreal and graduated in 1982, after which I became an intern at the Ontario Veterinary College from 1983 – 1984, learning about small animal medicine and surgery.
After that one year internship I knew that I wanted to work more with small animals rather than horses. Thus, I worked for several more years in small animal practice and surgery, and it was during that time I realized how different cats were and how much specialized care and attention they needed.
Therefore, in May 1988 I opened my feline only practice so that I could give felines the individualized care that they need. I find that feline medicine is individual to each cat and is part science, part detective work, and part art.
When not at the clinic, I enjoy many activities to keep me fit and healthy. I take palates lessons, am an avid golfer (although my score may not show it) and during the winter I enjoy skiing.
While relaxing at home, I enjoy the company of my three wonderful cats; Perry Mason, Jack Sparrow, and Mabel. They provide me with lots of entertainment and joy and take their job of making me happy very seriously.
I adopted Perry Mason first when I was attending an open house and the owner had a litter of kittens in the basement. Perry had the most personality and won his way into my heart in a matter of minutes.
Jack I adopted when my Doberman Edwina passed on and Perry became quite depressed and lonely. He had just entered the Buddy’s Buddies program and since Perry was yearning for some companionship, (not to mention that I had always wanted a black and white cat) I brought Jack home. Since that day he and Perry have been the best of friends.
Mabel was a kitten who had just entered the Buddy’s Buddy program and while I was up front talking to a client, Mabel looked up at me from the desk with her big eyes. It was those eyes that captivated me, and I took her home that very night.
